Welcome

This is the home page for the Northern Sky Observations web site, which presents the astronomical observations from a site in the northeast of England

Most of my night sky time has been devoted to DSO imaging with all its associated challenges.

PictureNGC2245 Region
Region Around NGC2245 in Monoceros

NGC2245 (centre of imaage) and NGC2247 (just to the left) are two reflection nebulae in the constellation of Monoceros.  They are approximately 2,500 light years away.  Also in the field of view can be seen IC2169, the large blue reflection nebula above and to the right of NGC2245, and IC2167, the smaller blue nebula above and to the left.

Camera - QHY8L; Scope - WO Star71 F4.9. 81*5min, Jan/Feb 2019.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen

Comet 46P/Wirtanen is a small short-period comet with a current orbital period of 5.4 years.

Camera - QHY8L; Scope - WO Star71 F4.9. 79*1min, 9th December 2018.

PictureIC5070 Pelican Nebula
IC5070 - Pelican Nebula in Cygnus

IC5070, the Pelican Nebula is an HII region associated with the North America Nebula in the constellation of Cygnus. The gaseous contortions of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican, giving rise to its name. The Pelican Nebula is located nearby first magnitude star Deneb, and is divided from its more prominent neighbour, the North America Nebula, by a molecular cloud filled with dark dust.  It is approximately 1,800 light years away.

Camera - QHY8L; Scope - WO Star71 F4.9. 24*5 mins, 9th October 2018.

NGC6820 & NFC6823 - Reflection Nebula & Cluster in Vulpecula

NGC6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC6823 in the constellation of  Vulpecula. The open star cluster NGC6823 is about 6000 light years away.

The image is composed from 53*3 minute exposures taken through an Ha narrowband filter on the 1st September 2018.  Camera - ASI1600 @ -20deg C, unity gain; Scope - AA8RC with CCDT67 focal reducer - F5.4.

M109 - Barred Spiral Galaxy in Ursa Major

Messier 109 is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation of Ursa Major.  It is approximately 84 million light-years away.

The image is composed from 65*5 minute exposures taken in April 2018.  Camera - QHY8L; Scope - AA8RC F8.
